What Is Ragdoll Physics?
Ragdoll physics is a procedural animation method. A character becomes a set of rigid bodies connected by joint constraints, and the body falls according to those constraints instead of playing a fixed death clip.
How the collapse is computed
A rigid body does not bend. A ragdoll is many rigid bodies: head, torso, upper arm, forearm, and so on. Constraints keep those pieces near a skeleton. When a hit or a death state turns the animation off, the solver integrates gravity, contacts, and the remaining joint forces. That is why a corpse can slump over a curb instead of replaying one authored slump.
Active ragdolls keep a motor or an animation drive fighting the constraints, so a living character can stumble and still try to stand. Passive ragdolls are the limp case. The developer page separates those two jobs by engine.
Ragdoll versus a single rigid body
A single rigid body is a crate or a car chassis. It has one mass and one orientation. A ragdoll has many masses and a graph of allowed bends. If you remove the constraints, you get a pile of props, which is the joke when a limb detaches. If you freeze the constraints into a pose, you are back to a keyframed character.
Why the name, and why the bare word misleads
The name compares the figure to a stuffed doll whose limbs are only loosely attached. Public explainers, including the Wikipedia ragdoll page, use that comparison. The bare search ragdoll is mostly the cat breed. On this site the word is always paired with physics, a game, or a mod.
People also say ragdolling for the moment a character goes limp in a multiplayer game. That is the same technique used as a verb, not a different engine.
Why the falls feel satisfying
A canned animation repeats. A constraint solve does not, so the second body hits the railing at a new angle. Games that players call satisfying, from GTA IV onward, are usually showing that variation, plus a heavy mass and a short blend out of the live animation. The history page puts dates on that shift.
Questions people actually ask
Why is it called ragdoll physics?
Because the linked limbs behave like a loose doll. The phrase is the public name for that constraint setup.
Is a ragdoll just a rigid body?
It is many rigid bodies plus joints. One rigid body cannot fold at the elbow.
Which games use it?
The games database lists PC, console, and Roblox examples, including the Euphoria games and the Roblox sandboxes.
