A Short History of Ragdoll Physics

The commercial memory of ragdoll physics starts with late-1990s PC games, then splits into middleware brands. The timeline attributes historical dates to their named sources; multiple pages from one publisher are not independent corroboration.

1997 ragdoll still
1997 research still. Trespasser, the 1998 game, is a separate commercial step.

1997 to the Havok years

John Nagle's 1997 still is a research image, not a shipped game. Jurassic Park: Trespasser (1998) is the commercial title public histories name when they talk about an early playable ragdoll. I do not have a second source that names an earlier shipped game, so I stop at that pair.

Through the 2000s, Havok and similar solvers showed up in action games as a death state. Source-engine games, including Garry's Mod, made the ragdoll a toy you could grab. That is a different culture from a story game that only uses the solver when a character dies.

Euphoria, and the games that skipped it

GTA IV in 2008 is the Rockstar title credited with putting Euphoria in front of a huge audience, followed by Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3, GTA V, and Red Dead Redemption 2. Wikipedia records an end to outside Euphoria licensing in 2017; this date has one cited historical source. There is no product page for an Euphoria 2.

People ask why GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas do not have the same falls. Those games shipped in 2002 and 2004, before Rockstar's Euphoria work, on the RenderWare-era engine. Their ragdoll behavior today comes from mods, which is why the San Andreas pages exist. I am not claiming the original discs had jointed deaths like GTA IV.

Active ragdolls and the 2026 Roblox wave

Active ragdolls, where a live motor fights the constraints, became a common tutorial topic in Unity and Unreal in the 2010s. On Roblox, the original Ragdoll Engine (2018) turned the idea into a social sandbox, then went private in 2023. October 2026 added another cluster of new experiences, tracked on the Roblox hub.

Questions people actually ask

What was the first game with ragdoll physics?

Public histories point at Trespasser (1998) as an early commercial game. The 1997 Nagle image is research, not that game. I have not found a source that names an earlier shipped title.

Why do Vice City and San Andreas lack GTA IV ragdolls?

They shipped years earlier on a different engine. The falls people remember on San Andreas come from later mods.
